Police Ask for Help in Curbing Recent Graffiti Trend

Abilene police are responding to a recent spike in graffiti across town.

In a statement issued this morning, police say reporting the crime and removing the graffiti from your property are important steps to helping reduce future incidents.

Police say if your home, business or property has been hit by graffiti artists, you should call the non-emergency number (325-673-8331) to report the crime, as this could help officers catch the perpetrator.

After graffiti is reported, it is important to remove or paint over the graffiti, because leaving it in place could be interpreted as condoning the crime, police say.

If this process sounds too expensive, APD partners with the Taylor County Juvenile Probation's Graffiti Eradication Program, which offers graffiti removal including power-washing or painting over the vandalized area. The labor is free but any paint or chemicals used must be provided by the property owner.

Police say all graffiti incident reports are submitted to APD's Youth Division, who then forwards victim information to the Juvenile Probation office, who then contacts the victim to discuss removing the graffiti.

Another way to help prevent graffiti is to keep spray paint in an inaccessible place, according to police.

The City of Abilene's Environmental Recycling Center, located at 2209 Oak St., accepts spray paint cans. The center is open Monday through Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4:45 p.m.
