Abilene Mail Processing Center to be Moved to Austin, Midland

Updated: February 23, 2012
In a press release sent out this morning, the United States Postal Service says operations from the mail processing center located in Abilene will be moved to Austin and Midland.

Once the transfer has been completed, mail processing operations at the Abilene Customer Service Mail Processing Center will cease.

"The decision to consolidate mail processing facilities recognizes the urgent need to reduce the size of the national mail processing network to eliminate costly underutilized infrastructure," said Chief Operating Officer Megan Brennan. "Consolidating operations is necessary if the Postal Service is to remain viable to provide mail service to the nation."

No specific date has been set for the transition, and until one is set, residential and business mailers will continue to be served through the current facilities.

A Postal Service spokesperson says approximately 135 jobs in Abilene will be affected. He says no one will be "laid off," as all bargaining employee reassignments will be made in accordance with the respective collective bargaining agreements with their unions.
