Abilene Housing Authority to Help More Low-Income Families

By: Gina Benitez
Updated: February 24, 2012
The Abilene Housing Authority has seen budget cuts across the board, but one of their programs hasn't been touched so they are reaching out to more families in need.

The five-year financially self-sufficient program allows low-income families to get back on their feet and remain stable, even after they've graduated.

Whether they want to go back to school, start a business or learn how to balance a budget, counselors are there every step of the way.

There are currently 30 families participating in their program, but the AHA is in the process of getting approval to increase the program by adding ten more slots.

"If we can help more families meet that American Dream of being able to do it on their own, that's what we want to do," says AHA's Geen Reed. "That's really the business that we're in is helping our low-income families become financially self-sufficient."

Congress believes this particular program has seen great results and is very beneficial to the community.
