Cowboys Baseball Split Doubleheader At Mississippi College

CLINTON, Miss. - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team split a doubleheader at Mississippi College on Friday afternoon, winning 5-0 in the first game and falling 9-1 in the nightcap at Frierson Field in Clinton, Miss.
 
In the first game, HSU jumped on the board in the second inning when Andrew Rehling reached on an infield single and scored when Bryan Blare reached on a two-base throwing error and scored on an RBI single by Jon Finney.
 
HSU added two more runs in the sixth inning. Rehling singled through the left side and moved up on a Blare sacrifice bunt. Finney grounded out moving Rehling to third. Chris Matthews and Blake Sieck then drew walks to load the bases and Marcus Uechi had a two-run single up the middle.
 
HSU added an insurance run in the seventh on a Rehling sacrifice fly that scored Troy Tarrant. Rehling and Tarrant had two hits each for the Cowboys.
 
Troy Nicholson (2-0) worked the seven-inning shutout for the Cowboys. He scattered seven hits and struck out four without a walk. Ian Underwood allowed five runs in six-plus innings. He allowed eight hits and four earned runs.
 
In the nightcap, MC got to HSU starter Andrew Jacques. The senior righthander, who was pitching in his first game in over a year because of Tommy John surgery allowed four runs (two earned) and struck out four in three and two-third innings of work.
 
Jordan Dotson allowed two runs in an inning and two-thirds of action and Parker Robinson worked two scoreless innings. MC added three runs against three different Cowboys in the eighth inning. 
 
HSU scored its lone run in the third inning on an RBI single by Rehling. Rehling had a pair of hits to pace the Cowboys, who only had four hits in the game.
 
Brett Hightower had an RBI single for MC in the first inning, Josh Perez had a sacrifice fly in the second and MC scored four times in the fourth inning. Spencer Brunson had the big blow with a three-run home run. Jeremy Simmons had an RBI double in the eighth.
 
 
HSU is now 4-2 on the year and Mississippi College is 3-6. The teams will concluded the three-game set on Saturday at noon.
