Texas Bluebonnets Surviving Despite Prolonged Drought

By: Natalie Ferarri and Stetson Samuel
Updated: February 27, 2012
The dry land may be keeping a lot of plants from growing, but not wild-flowers.

The Taylor County AgriLife Extension Office says, wild-flowers, like Bluebonnets, should still flourish as long as rain does occasionally makes its way into the Big Country.

"Our rainfall that we did receive in December and January are very conducive to bringing in a strong wildflower group for the spring. The rain-fall that we've got did hit at a very timely manner to germinate and bring up a lot of our wildflowers, including our bluebonnets, " said Robert Pritz with the  Taylor County AgriLife Extension Office.

Pritz says if we had gone through another dry winter, it would have affected the wildflower population in the long term.
