Snyder is on the market.
Snyder City Manager Merle Taylor informed Snyder Chamber of Commerce directors that if the building is not sold within two to three weeks, it could be dismantled. Taylor added that if the building is purchased, major renovations must be done.
Taylor said if the building comes down, turning lanes could be built to help large trucks turn on the roadway.
City officials have had concerns about the building for several years. In February 2009, the Snyder Fire Department allowed City Inspector Izzy Rivera to view the building from the air on the ladder truck.
At that time, Rivera reported that the roof was collapsing. "There really isn't any roof left," he said in a 2009 interview.
A previous owner announced plans to renovate the building with a business on the first floor and apartments on the remaining floor. Taylor said those plans were dropped, "probably because of the building's condition."
Also during Monday's chamber board meeting, Paula Hatfield reported progress is being made on building bathrooms at the pocket park area on the square. She said numerous plans had been presented and discussed, but an anonymous donor has pledged the money needed for the project as well as to work on the construction, Hatfield said.
"I am truly working on it as hard as I can," Hatfield said, adding that the bathroom project should be complete by Labor Day weekend.
Melissa Elam, the chamber's executive director, reported that $9,400 remains in the pocket park fund, all through donations.
Barbara Leatherwood was unable to attend Monday's meeting, but Elam reported that the sports complex feasibility study should begin in the next few weeks. The chamber will also release the $10,000 it approved from the hotel occupancy tax fund to help pay for the study.
The Board of County Development allocated $5,000 for the study. While discussing sponsorships for events, board members asked Elam to come up with a tiered-level program for 2013.
Bill Robertson, board vice chairman, said he would prefer to get one letter rather than several asking for sponsorships. He did request that payments be made over the course of the year and not in one "lump sum."
Elam said she would look at the program and report back to the board.
She was also asked to review an alternate date for the 2013 chamber banquet. It was previously announced that Feb. 14 would be the date, but Janell Jones, board member, said some restaurant owners were concerned about losing business to the chamber banquet on what is traditionally one of their busiest days.
Janet Spence, board member, also said some people have asked if the banquet could fall on a weekend. Sandra Salinas, executive assistant, said attendance was not good when the banquet was held on the weekend.
The policies and procedures were tabled until a committee can review the by-laws. Bill Crist, board member, asked to review the by-laws to make sure they work cohesively with the policies and procedures. He noted there were several conflicting statements between the two documents.
