Burials Go Green

A South Carolina mortuary is breaking new ground by offering "eco-friendly" burial options.
J. Henry Stuhr Funeral Chapels and Crematories is first in the state to offer a truly green burial to anyone who sees the end of life as an opportunity to give something back to the earth.
Biodegradable burial containers and the option of not undergoing embalmment give Stuhrs the distinction of being the first "green" funeral chapel in South Carolina.
"Folks are choosing it now because of they say it is an eco-friendly eco aware option", says Keith Riddle, managing director at Stuhrs.
There are three main options for a green burial: straw coffin sized basket, wooden slab draped with a shroud or sea-salt urns.
There are no approved green-burial cemeteries in the Charleston, so families must travel to Eastover or Westminster for interment.
