Exploring Abilene: Texas Country at its Finest

The event kicks off at the Abilene Speedway with more than 10 artists performing an unplugged acoustic song-swap show on Friday night for a Texas Independence Day showcase jam session. Saturday, March 3, Outlaws showcases the hottest Texas bands from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Legends take the stage from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. in a once in a lifetime, unplugged fashion featuring three various legends at a time. The evening continues from 12 a.m. to 1 a.m. with an encore of all the artists who will take the stage together for the final set. The Abilene Christian University presents "Defiance" this weekend. This John Patrick Shanley work follows two officers, one black and one white, who are on a collision course over race, women and the high cost of doing the right thing. The play explores power, love and responsibility- who has it, who wants it, and who deserves it. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday evenings and 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. The Abilene Opera Association and guest artists brings to Abilene, "Puccini's Tosca" March 2, 4 and 6. This opera story is set in 1800, around the time of the French revolutionary wars and Napoleon's invasion of Italy. Tosca plays out in miniature the overarching political drama of the time, which was turbulent and bloody. Enjoy this exciting story at the historic Paramount Theatre. See how well you sing outside of the car and belt it out for the new Abilene Idol Competition from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Mall of Abilene Dillard's Courtyard. Don't want to try out? Cost is $20 for the first 100 contestants; winners for the final competition on March 23 will be announced at 6 p.m. Proceeds benefit Chorus Abilene.
Stop by the Abilene Civic Center Saturday and Sunday for the Big Country Home and Garden Expo. This is the only area event dedicated to the home building and remodeling industry. "The Duct Tape Guys" will make special presentations at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Times are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday.
