Described as "discreet and powerful," Loud 'N Clear is a personal sound amplifier which aims to help people hear better without disturbing others. So instead of shouting across the way, one could simply attach the piece to either ear, turn up the volume, and carry on a casual conversation.

We put it to the test using with the help of one of our favorite volunteers, Abilene Today and First at Five anchor Maxine Ridling.

I first give it a go as Maxine carries on a conversation, with herself, as she preps for Abilene Midday. As I step back, about 40 feet, I can't hear what she's saying, even with the volume turned up. I hear amplified noises from around the building, but that's about it.

We turn the tables and Max gives it a go. As our floor director Brian and I carry on a casual conversation, Maxine does her best from a distance away to make out what we're saying.

The device doens't seem to help. Also, at times it emits a loud, high pitch squeel, one to leave your ears ringing.

The packaing for Loud N Clear states it is not nor is it a substitute for a hearing aid. Given our results, I say that Loud N Clear is a no go.
