Heather Green was laid off from her job a little over a week ago.

"It's kind of disheartening, because you are either overqualified or underqualified," Green says, "But at the same time, there are still jobs out there to be had."

Heather is 4 months pregnant with her third child. She recently got married, and her husband is able to support her and her children, but she's still concerned about finding a new job.

"Am I willing to do the training to get in a better position to find a better position, or am I willing to sacrifice a few things to have a job," Green said.

Abilene's unemployment rate is 6.0%, which is down 0.2 % from last month.  Officials with Workforce Solutions in Abilene say there are a good amount of job openings in our area.

"Right now, we are running about 180 job openings through this workforce center," said Steve Collins with Workforce Solutions of West Central Texas.

They have openings for everything from mechanics and welders to customer service representatives and truck drivers.

"I think we have been real fortunate here in Abilene," Collins said, "The employers here are beginning to hire and rehire a lot of folks."

This is exciting news to job seekers like Heather, who choose to stay positive about the current job market and finding their next career.

"I just know the next thing will be way better than anything I had before, or it's going to teach me something I didn't know," Green said.
