It was a project designed to teach students to live history, rather than just learn about it.

"It teaches you a lot about other people and what the military does for us," said ATEMS student, Danielle Stewart.

The 10th grade class at ATEMS presented a special world history project Friday night. The students broke up into groups of three, with each group researching an Abilene veteran.  All the veterans used for this project were buried at Abilene's Texas State Veteran Cemetery.

"They've gotten family information on them, items form the family about them. They researched historical events that have occurred as a result of their service around the world," said ATEMS teacher, Dr. Ronald Blevins.

The project presentation took place at AISD. Students started the evening by speaking about the
veteran they did their research on.

"Donald Manly was in the 509th bomb quadrant , which was the quadrant that dropped the first atomic bomb," one student said.

"I had Lt. Col. Walter P. Morton. He was in the United States Air Force. He served for 30 years. After he retired from the Air Force, he was an attorney in Abilene," added Stewart.

The veterans' family members were invited to attend the presentation, along with the students' family members. There was also a special video presentation that each group put together about their veteran.

"We want to do projects that are real world, that effect real lives," Blevins said.

Giving the students the opportunity to learn about history and honor some of the men and woman that served our country.
