They're watching more closely than ever.

Traffic police officers say you can expect to see more of them around the Mall of Abilene.

"They'll expect to see an increased presence of officers there", said Sgt. Richard Waggoner of the Abilene Police Department.  They're gonna see a lot more cars being stopped.

Its an attempt to bring down the number of auto accidents in the area.  So far Abilene has had a seven percent decline in collisions, but police want to bring it down even more.

"Really focusing on the area where we have most of our collisions and trying to get drivers to pay more attention, not be messing with radio, texting and really focus on their driving," said Waggoner.

Police say the intersection between Ridgemont and Clack is a cause for major concern.  There's a stop sign, but it's illegal to turn other than into the first right lane.  It may seem like a minor violation, but its one like this one that police say cause the most accidents.

"Sometimes if you're not really focusing on the task at hand, which is the driving you can miss something and then we have a collision," said Waggoner.

More police officers like officer Loren Adlesperger will be on patrol around the mall checking for any violations that could potentially put other drivers at risk.  He says using the turn lanes as medians and unsafe lane changes are among the most common violations.

"If somebody turns or cuts somebody or failed a right of way or they can turn when it's unsafe, hence why sometimes you have collisions," he said.

The Mall of Abilene is a common area for accidents and police say the extra patrol is to ensure drivers be more compliant of traffic laws to avoid collisions.

"Be a good defensive driver, that will save you immensely, whether you have the right of way or not," said Waggoner.
