Apple's newest iPad may not have the new name many people expected, but it does have the new features.

A high resolution screen leads the list of new features, one sharper than the
average HDTV.

The new iPad's also got a faster processor to speed up functions, as well as an improved camera and software updates, including one to organize and adjust photos.

"It's a play Apple is making toward making the iPad not just a tool for content consumption, but also more of a tool for content creation," explains CNBC Tech correspondent Jon Fortt.

That's territory normally reserved for PCs, but Apple CEO Tim Cook talked Wednesday of the iPad being part of the post-PC era.

"We are redefining the whole category that Apple developed with the iPad," Cook said.

4G wireless broadband is also part of the iPad's evolution.

The base price remaining at $499.

Despite the arrival of the new iPad, iPad2 is not going away.

Apple is cutting the price of it to $399 for the base model.
