DPS Officials Advise Against Spring Break Trips to Mexico

Updated: March 9, 2012
If you've been planning a spring break trip south of the border, you may want to think again.

Department of Public Safety officials are warning strongly against traveling to Mexico.

They believe the Mexican government has made great strides in combating the issues, but say cartel violence is still a significant threat.

Many crimes against Americans in Mexico go unpunished, and officials are trying to raise awareness and asking travelers to look objectively at the dangers.

"Many people travel to Mexico without incident, but it is still a dangerous and volatile situation in Mexico. The violence is random, it is unpredictable, and because of that we believe that the risks can't be ignored," says a DPS spokesman.

He says travelers who already have planned trips should carefully research their intended destination.
