Fuel prices are surging, but think again if you think you can fill up without paying.

Jack Myers is a gas station clerk and says he's more alert than ever.

"If we know the person that's a regular customer, we'll turn the pump on for them, if we don't know them then we won't turn it on," he said.

Even so, he says people still try to pump and flee. Just yesterday he caught one man who wanted to trick his way into free gas.

"He wasn't just someone that wasn't familiar with the system of coming in and paying for the gas, he wanted to get some free gasoline," said Myers.

Even with the prepaid system people are still trying to steal gas.  Many times swiping a card with little or no balance  and as gas prices continue to rise, more and more clerks are on the alert.

Its a much more common problem for the smaller stations that oftentimes allow a person to simply swipe and leave.

But gas clerks are catching on, and Myers says it wont happen under his watch.

They have to come inside and pay for the gasoline, that's the only way they're going to get it.

Especially now that prices may soon reach the $4.00 mark.

"If it goes over the four dollars a gallon mark you'll see more," he said.
