Local firefighters rescued two people from their burning home in northeast Abilene early this morning.

A home on Fortune Avenue caught fire around midnight. Winds caused the fire to grow and endangered a second house to the north.

Firefighters were told two people were still inside the house when they arrived.

"We were able to locate two victims inside the structure," says AFD's Joey Kincaid. "We did carry them to the outside and they were transported to the hospital."

Abilene Fire Department reports this morning that a 66-year-old male and a 23-year-old male remain in critical condition.

A 33-year-old female neighbor was also transported to the hospital after she broke a window trying to help the occupants escape. She was treated and released, according to AFD.

Investigators believe the fire possibly started in the back porch area before spreading underneath the home and through the back wall.

Firefighters say a dog died in the fire.
