ACU Tennis: Wildcats Shake Rattlers, Roll 9-0 Over St. Mary's

By: ACU Athletics

ABILENE - Abilene Christian's nationally ranked men's and women's teams made quick work of their South Central Region rivals from St. Mary's as each side won 9-0 Thursday evening at the outdoor Eager Tennis Pavilion.

ACU's sixth-ranked women's club improved to 17-2 behind its 11th shutout of the season, while the 16th-ranked men raised their season record to 15-7 and region mark to 4-1.

St. Mary's women's team came into today's dual unranked, but the Rattler men were recently ranked 10th in the region and 50th in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

However ranked or unranked, it didn't matter much to either team of Wildcats as they finished all 18 matches in just a little over three hours. All the singles matches were won in straight sets - including a pair of 'double bagels' pitched on the women's side - and only one of the doubles contests was settled in a tiebreak as the No. 1 team of Nick Plum and Guilherme Gesser rallied to beat the duo of Marcin Marczewski and Andrej Klipa, 9-8 (9-7).

Winning on the women's side for ACU were No. 2 Julia Mongin, Brittney Reed, No. 37 Micah Hermsdorf, Hannah Kelley, Emily Conrad, and Felicity Delgado, who remains the only undefeated Wildcat at 9-0.

Hermsdorf's and Conrad's wins kept them tied with Laura Mongin for the team lead in victories with 16. Laura Mongin's lone match today was at No. 2 doubles where she combined with Reed to beat Denissia Gonzalez and Valentine Lambrechts, 8-1.

Plum and Gesser were two of ACU's singles match winners, joining a group that also featured No. 6 Hans Hach, Borja Cortes, Alfredo Desiati, and Michael Morris.

Hach, who has played all his matches at the No. 1 line this year, leads his team with 17 wins, and his victory at No. 2 doubles with Desiati was his 19th of the spring.

Following today's action, the men are off from competition until next Wednesday, April 4 when they play host to Lone Star Conference rival Midwestern State. The women, meanwhile, are en route to Las Cruces, N.M. for a 2 p.m. dual Friday vs. New Mexico State. They will then play at UTEP Saturday on the way back home.
