Cowgirl Softball Team Sweeps Schreiner

ABILENE, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons' softball team remained perfect in American Southwest Conference West Division play with a doubleheader sweep of Schreiner on Saturday afternoon at Ellis Field, winning the first game 6-0 and winning the nightcap 6-2.
 
In the first game the Cowgirls scored three runs in each of the first two innings and Blair Wallace tossed a four-hit shutout to improve to 11-3 on the year in the circle.
 
In the first inning, Mac Clay walked and Amy Meyer doubled her to third. Wallace and Namey followed with back-to-back RBI singles to center. Shelby McIntyre had an RBI single later in the inning.
 
In the second inning, Clay singled and Meyer doubled her to third again. After a Wallace pop-up, Namey had an RBI single to left and Meyer scored on a passed ball. Namey later scored on an error.
 
Namey had three hits and Clay and Meyer added two for HSU in the first game. Shelby Kimmons had two of the four Schreiner hits. Jill McGinnis fell to 4-8, allowing six runs on seven hits in one and one-third innings.
 
In the nightcap, Sarah Shurbet improved to 8-4 on the year with a complete-game effort. She scattered seven hits and did not allow an earned run.
 
Clay and Laine Strickland had two hits each for the Cowgirls. Callie Ceaser had three of the seven Schreiner hits.
 
SU jumped to a 2-0 lead in the third inning with single runs in the first and third. Ceaser had an RBI single in the first and SU scored on an error in the third.
 
HSU took the lead in the third inning on a three-run home run by Wallace. HSU added an RBI single by Meyer and a two-run double by Strickland in the fifth inning. 
 
HSU is now 19-7 overall and 12-0 in ASC West and Schreiner fell to 10-18 overall and to 6-10 in league play. HSU plays at second-place Mary Hardin-Baylor with the ASC West title likely on the line next weekend.
