Updated: March 31, 2012
The City of Merkel held a large celebration in honor of the Lone Star State.

The 4th Annual Texas Independence Celebration took place Saturday (3/31) in Merkel. Hundreds of residents from all across the Big country came out to show their love for Texas.

This is the first year the City of Merkel has added a car show to the event, which has helped bring a much larger and diverse crowd out to the celebration.

The event coordinator, Roger Moore said, "It brings lots of people in and this car show has just been spectacular. Everybody should have some kind of little Texas Celebration."

While Texas' Independence Day is on March 2nd, the City of Merkel decided to use this celebration as both a Texas heritage and Independence Day festival.
