HSU Cowboys Fall To McMurry War Hawks 15-4

ABILENE, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons' baseball team dropped the opening game of its three-game American Southwest Conference series to McMurry, 15-4, on Friday night at Hunter Field.
 
McMurry took the early lead on a three-run home run by Matt Thompson in the first inning. HSU countered with an RBI single by Troy Tarrant in the first, scored a run on a double play groundout by Tarrant in the third and Andrew Rehling had a solo home run in the third to tie the game at 3-3.
 
McMurry added four runs in the fourth inning. Nick Marsh had a two-run single and Connor Griffith had an RBI double. HSU picked up a run on a Tarrant sacrifice fly in the fifth.
 
Dylan DeLeon had a sacrifice fly in the eighth, Thompson had an RBI double and Griffith an RBI single to make it 10-4. McMurry scored five times in the ninth inning. Ruben Zendejas had a two-run single Thompson had an RBI double, Marcellous Biggins had an RBI single and DeLeon had a RBI single.
 
Rehling had two hits for HSU and Thompson was 5-for-5 with five RBIs to pace McMurry.
 
Troy Nicholson took the loss as he lasted just three and two-third innings and allowed seven runs on nine hits. Alex Bradley worked three and two-third innings for HSU allowing only one run.
 
Spencer Smith went the distance for McMurry. The righthander threw 138 pitches and scattered seven hits to improve to 5-2.
 
The Cowboys are now 13-14 on the year and 6-7 in league play. McMurry remained atop the ASC West standings with an 11-2 record. The War Hawks are 17-14 on the year. The teams will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday.
