Music has the ability to encourage creativity and sooth away your stress. No genre does that with more spunk and class than jazz.

Derek Brown, Director of the Jazz Department at Abilene Christian University, created the Abilene Jazz Fest, what he says started as an "experiment" before growing into what is now an annual event.

A total of eight local bands will take part in the festival, four from surrounding high schools and four from area colleges.

"It's going to be really fast paced," says Brown. "Each group is going to play about three tunes for about fifteen minutes and then there is going to be a quick transition."

The entire event will last up to three hours, but according to Brown, audience members can come and go as they wish.

"People don't have to be concerned," he adds, "there are concession stands open the whole time."

Unlike sporting events, when these schools come together to play, it's all about fun, not competition.

"You have your good mix of improvisation and styles," describes Brown, "should be a lot of fun!"
