Downtown Abilene Preps for 'BIG DAY' This Saturday

On Saturday, April 14 the Abilene Downtown Association will host events throughout downtown for the second annual "BIG DAY Downtown." Many of the members of the Abilene Downtown Association have planned unique events and special offers for this day to encourage the entire community to come downtown for a full day of entertainment, food and shopping. The organizers hope that visitors will come downtown to "Do it all."

The headline entertainment for the day is the U.S. Navy rhythm & blues combo Freedom from Memphis, TN performing live in Everman Park at 10:30 a.m. and again at 2:00 p.m. The Cooper High School Band will perform in Minter Park from 12:30 p.m.-2:00 p.m. featuring a number of the band's award-winning ensembles and soloists, including trumpet, trombone, clarinet, flute, saxophone and tuba.

Association President Betty Hukill said, "It should be a fun for everyone. This day is designed to bring visitors to downtown and to experience the exciting things we have to offer. It will be another great day to be in downtown Abilene."

Other events on the agenda include a free living history festival at Frontier Texas featuring cowboy shootouts and frontier military demonstrations from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The Abilene Preservation League is will host a historic walking tour at 1:30pm and is also partnering with Abilene Medical Alliance to offer free bicycle helmets to families at the Elks Art Center from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The Paramount Theater will be showing the classic "Ben Hur" at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Other locations participating include: The Grace Museum, Cockrell Galleries, Honeycomb Tree, the Center for Contemporary Arts, Bogie's Deli, Texas Star Trading Company, Sweet Celebrations, Cypress Street Station, Bible Hardware, Beehive Restaurant, McKay's, the NCCIL, Monk's Coffee House, The Leaf, Eternal Threads, Relics Home, Under One Roof/The Loft, 12th Armored Division Museum and the Abilene Public Library.
