City Manager Edward Brown is heading up the search and is currently interviewing candidates.
The city initially received over 30 applications, narrowed the search to ten and will now interview only the seven remaining.
Brown says he has placed a ranking on the remaining candidates including one from within the Sweetwater Police Department.
"We go through the interview process I believe by asking 22 questions of them to see something about their background and also about their future hopes and how they'll fit with this department," Brown says.
He hopes to have a new police chief in office by May 1.
