AISD Will Soon Say Goodbye To 91-Year Old Travis Elementary School

Humphrey was one of the last administrators to run the school just before it closed in 1984.
"It closed as an elementary at that time and then was used as a discipline reassignment center and adult education was here," he continues.
Now, the only thing that is left is the AISD bakery, but in May, that will not even be there.
It will be moved to the new Martinez Elementary, which means it is out with the old and in with the new.
Humphrey explains, "Being a three story building, a lot of the space being taken up with stair cases and hallways, it's not very suitable for a modern elementary building, we'd never build one with that arrangement now."
AISD says the cost to redo it as a school is almost absurd.
"It may be very good as a renovated office building, with individual offices," says Humphrey.
Just like one of Travis' identical buildings did on Hickory Street.
So, maybe selling will not be such a bad idea after all.
"It's so much more cost effective and energy efficient, everything is better as we sell off the old buildings and move into the new. This is just the way you need to do it," says Humphrey.
