Brownwood Police Release March Crime Statistics

Brownwood Police Chief Mike Corley released crime statistics from the police department for the month of March along with year-to-date numbers for 2011 and 2012.

Corley releases Brownwood Police Department crime statistics on a monthly basis as a program to have a more transparent department to the public. Corley stated that he also looks at these numbers to see where the department needs to focus.

The total number of crimes increased by 43 incidents in March as compared to the previous month, showing an increase of approximately 37.7 percent. Of these crimes, about 24.8 percent were cleared for the month of March 2012.

Year-to-date statistics for 2012 show that 21.1 percent of reported crimes were cleared as compared to 16 percent of the  number of crimes during the same period of 2011. The 2012 total number of reported crimes is up for the year by 63.2 percent as compared to 2011. The majority of these crimes are larceny theft which was up by 104 percent as compared to year-to-date numbers for March of 2011.

According to reports released in March, DWI arrests increased 40 percent as compared to February. The number of motor vehicle accidents was up 9.3 percent from February as well. The year-to-date report shows that 2012 has had 23 more DWI arrests than 2011. There has been a decrease of 11.1 percent in the number of motor vehicle accidents in 2012 compared to the prior year.

The number reported refers to crimes that were assigned a case number and responded to by police. The number cleared refers to how many cases were closed either by an arrest or after further investigation.
