Unused, Expired Medication Disposal Set for Saturday

By: News Release, Hendrick Health System
Updated: April 12, 2012
All Big Country residents are encouraged to clean out their medicine cabinets and bring unused and expired medications to Abilene's Medication Cleanout event April 14.

Collection will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center's School of Pharmacy, located at 1718 Pine St.

It is recommended that all expired or unused medications be destroyed to avoid accidental poisoning of younger children, as well as misuse by others. Multiple excess medications in the home can also lead to confusion and selection of the wrong medication for the wrong person, or at the wrong time.

"Customers often call the pharmacy and ask about the best way to destroy unused or expired medications," said Greg Young, pharmacy manager for Hendrick Professional Pharmacy. "This event provides a safe, convenient and responsible way to dispose of medications that are no longer needed. I hope the Abilene community will take advantage of this unique opportunity."

This convenient and free method of medication disposal is a joint effort between Hendrick Health System, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center's School of Pharmacy, the Abilene Police Department and the Texas Panhandle Poison Center.
