The Department of Public Safety says it is investigating an unusual single car accident that happened in Merkel Saturday afternoon. Just after 3p.m., crews arrived to a car that was smashed in on the passenger side and sitting on the side of County Road 287.
According to DPS, the car ran off the road, went through a fence and then struck a tree, trapping the passenger and driver inside.
The car was damaged to the point where fire fighters had to pry the doors back to remove the passenger.
Both were taken to Hendrick Medical Center for treatment.
No word yet on what caused the car to run off the road.
