The Abilene Fire Department has issued the following release regarding the fire at the former VFW building on North Third Street:

At 12:45 p.m. today, callers reported smoke coming from a building in the 2200 block of North Third Street.

Abilene firefighters arrived to find extremely heavy smoke conditions and fire coming from the upper wall and roof areas of a cabinet shop, set up in the former Veterans of Foreign Wars hall.

A second alarm was requested and crews battled the blaze for just over an hour before bringing it completely under control.

There were no injuries reported.

The building and contents are believed to be largely salvageable but the loss is estimated at $60,000.

Fire Department investigators are still working to determine the cause of this fire.
