Gina Walker was only a few weeks pregnant when things first started going wrong.

"The whole pregnancy was horrific. Every week was a new symptom, a new hemorrhage, a new blood clot, a new this a new that, the baby was going to have issues," said Walker.

Against the odds, Addison Grace Walker was born healthy.

But immediately after her birth, her mother's condition turned serious.

"She had a known diagnosis of a condition we call placenta percreta, where the placenta can invade through the uterine wall and go into the bladder," said Dr. Jason Parker of UT Medicine San Antonio.

The condition occurs in about one percent of pregnancies. Doctor's were prepared for a lot of bleeding, but they've never had a case this complicated. They expected Gina to need about ten liters of blood, she required 117.

Experts say Gina has roughly a gallon worth of blood in her body. She received 35 gallons of blood. That is more than what would fit in this container.

"We have not ever transfused that much blood to a patient," said Sherrie Warner, transfusion medicine manager.

Friends, family and hospital staff rushed to donate blood to keep up with the demand and miraculously Gina survived.

"Yes, this was a miracle. There's not other way to explain it. Something else was involved, assisting  us and helping her survive this process," said Parker.

Walker said, "I've always been very religious or just in my beliefs, but now my faith is just even more because I know that a true miracle has happened."
