"It is frayed, rubber is beginning to show through and it's time to replace it," says Joe Humphrey, the construction coordinator for Abilene ISD.
So the district decided to go with a company called FieldTurf for the major installation.
"This is the latest out. This is the newest stuff. It's called Revolution," Humphrey explains.
A product that is not only being installed here in Abilene, but also at an NFL stadium.
"We're not quite beating the Seattle Seahawks in getting it down, but they're currently putting it down about the time we are and this is supposed to be the best on the market."
Anything that is worth having is worth waiting for, or at least that's how the saying goes.
So, it is going to take a little while before the process is complete.
Humphrey says, "They have to get the infield rubber, the crushed rubber that's in the turf and after they pull that out, they're beginning to cut it, and then they'll strip it and haul it off."
Once the old turf is completely removed and the foundation is leveled, the Revolution turf will be laid out and sewn together for the finished product.
It will be the moment we've all been waiting for and kickoff will be here before you know it.
"If all goes well we hope our spring scrimmage games, both Abilene High and Cooper, they'll be able to come out here," says Humphrey.
