Local Businesses get Names Out at Big Day Downtown

"Look at what Abilene has to offer, and downtown in particular. And boy, do we have a lot to offer," said Carolyn Cockerell, Director of Cockerell Gallery.

It was Abilene's Big Day Downtown. Along with live music, food and face painting, local business vendors were selling a lot of their products on the streets of downtown.

"Every single one of our vendors today has sol many things. We've not done that before," said Cockerell.

The hustle and bustle of downtown today gave local business owners a chance to gain a littel more exposure. This includes Lyudmyla Baron, who makes and sells her own maternity clothes on eBay.

"I'm pregnant right now, and I was looking for something cute to wear. I couldn't find something like that, so I had to make my own t-shirt," said Baron. "And when I made them and so many people liked them, my husband said, 'You know, why don't you start selling them?'"

And while not all of the people who stopped at her table were looking for maternity wear, it still gave Baron a chance to establish herself for when she does open a store downtown.

"you know, they think about their friends now. And if we establish a local presence, then it will work better," she said.

It's vendors like Baron's Unique Maternity that the Downtown Association is trying to promote. Reminding the people of Abilene that there really is a lot to offer downtown.

"We want people to know that the downtown areas are the hub of any community," said Cockerell. "And to remember, you know that malls are great, but look at what downtown venues have to offer."
