#6 Wildcats Too Much For #17 Cal State L.A. In 8-1 Victory

LOS ANGELES - The sixth-ranked Abilene Christian women's tennis team played its first dual match in more than a week this morning, yet showed no signs of rust in a convincing 8-1 road victory at 17th-ranked Cal State Los Angeles.

The win was ACU's 20th of the season, while the DII Golden Eagles of the California Collegiate Athletic Association fell to 13-5.

Winners of 12 of its last 13 duals, ACU (20-3) also remains undefeated this year against DII competition at 13-0 and has beaten them all by either a margin of 8-1 or 9-0.

The Golden Eagles lone point Saturday came at No. 1 doubles where their duo of Christie Lau and Larn McShane scalded the 11th-ranked tandem of Hannah Kelley and Micah Hermsdorf, 8-1. The loss for Kelley and Hermsdorf was only their third of the spring, but their ACU teammates responded in kind as Brittney Reed and Madelyn Walker blanked their opposition at No. 3, and Julia and Laura Mongin ran away with an 8-3 win at No. 2.

The doubles victories provided an extra shot of momentum the Wildcats then carried over into singles, where all but one of the contests was decided in straight sets. The lone exception came at the No. 3 line, where Reed had to battle back to beat Leora Hemmerich 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.

Reed's win was her 20th of the season, keeping her one ahead of Hermsdorf, Emily Conrad, and Laura Mongin for the team lead. Hermsdorf, who's ranked 37th in DII, beat McShane at the No. 2 position, 6-3, 6-0. Laura Mongin twice edged Jill Sangria at the No. 4 spot, 7-5, 7-6, while Conrad at No. 6 cruised past Maria Xavier 6-0, 6-1.

Second-ranked Julia Mongin extended her winning streak at the top line to a 12th match after doubling up Christie Lau, 6-3, 6-3, and Hannah Kelley bested Tiffany Leung at No. 5, 6-4, 6-3.

The Wildcats return to action Sunday for a neutral-site dual at Pepperdine vs. UC San Diego.
