ACU's Nick Jones Moves Up To Third On All-Time DII Performance List

EL PASO, Texas - Abilene Christian senior thrower Nick Jones Saturday moved up to third place on the all-time NCAA Division II performance list in the discus after launching a throw of 203 feet, 3 inches (61.95 meters) at Kidd Field during the UTEP Invitational.

Jones' effort ranks behind former Wildcat and 1996 Olympian Andy Kokhanovsky, who recorded the DII record of 211-5 (64.44m) at the Abilene Invitational on May 9, 1996, and 1988 Olympian Randy Heisler (204-1, 62.22m), who posted his top mark with the University of Indianapolis at the 1984 NCAA Championships.

Jones also won the shot put with a push of 61-5.50 (18.73m), besting several DI opponents from Kansas, Boise State, New Mexico and Rice by more than two meters. In the discus, Jones beat Jayhawk and Kokhanovsky pupil Mason Finley by 1.82 meters. Finley has won six All-America titles during Kokhanovsky's seven-year tenure at KU.

Several additional ACU throwers recorded personal bests at UTEP, including Shalaina Lakey (NCAA Provisional, 163-7) and Lauren Hartwick (159-0) in the hammer throw, and Aaron Bynum in the discus (149-6).

Ameilia Mitchell recorded a season best in the javelin of 129-2, but came up two inches shy of hitting the NCAA provisional standard of 131-2 (40.00 m).

Strong winds throughout western Texas nullified a few other quality efforts, including Levance Williams' excellent long jump of 25-2.75 that was aided by a 8.0 meters per second tailwind, and Paris Robertson's time of 10.45 in the 100m (4.4 mps). The highest tailwind allowed for NCAA submission purposes is 4.0 mps, and for record purposes it's an even stricter 2.0 mps.

Elsewhere on the track, Chloe Susset won the 1,500m (4:46.19) and Ayesha Rumble took first in the 800m (2:16.54). Defending Lone Star Conference Track Athlete of the Week Banjo Jaiyesimi placed third in the 400m with a season best time of 49.92.

ACU's track and field teams are next slated to compete on Saturday, April 21 at Baylor's Michael Johnson Classic.
