AISD Pushes Parent-Student Communication in Wake of Tragedy

Abilene Independent School District addressed the media today regarding Sunday's car accident that killed one student and injured several others.

Superintendent Dr. Heath Burns began by acknowledging the tragedy and the impact it's had on campuses throughout the district.

AISD Director of Accountability Jeannette Forehand spoke about the steps parents should take as they help their own children deal with the death of a fellow student, as well as the injuries sustained by the other students.

Mrs. Forehand stressed the importance of parents keeping the lines of communication open with their children.

She suggested using age-appropriate language when discussing the accident, and making sure the students aren't solely getting information from social media.

Dr. Burns advised that parents simply cherish and love their children every day, under any circumstance.

"It makes my heart hurt," Dr. Burns said.
