Ag Report: Texas Cattle Inventory

Not knowing where this year will take them, ranchers with serious intent to enter, rebuild or expand their beef operation can't wait till rains come and pastures are completely healed to develop a plan.

That's why the Taylor County Extension Office is hosting an event called "Rebuilding the Beef Herd."

The business of beef is getting a makeover.

The future of the market will be significantly different than even the recent past.

Changes in grain and land use, ever increasing input costs and marginal profits could shape demographics in the beef industry for the next two decades.

For those ranchers either getting back into the business, or starting a new, a plan has to be in place when that opportunity presents itself.

"Because of the volatility of the markets, and the high prices that we're looking at right now, we want to make sure people are getting back into the cattle business with plan," said Taylor County Extension Agent, Robert Pritz.

The nice folks over at the Taylor County Extension Office have a full day planned, providing 5 different sessions covering the basics of the business.

The event includes:

General Session
8:30 -     Beef - Better (and Different) Times Ahead
               Forage Recovery & Pasture Restocking
              Evaluating Replacement Options

Lunch
1:00-    Can a $2500 Cow Break Even?

Breakouts
2:30    Flexibility in Resource Use
    Leased Grazing - What, Why and How
3:30    Repeat Breakout Sessions

5:00    Adjourn

Pritz added, "Some of our specialists are going to be here to give us some examples of how we can build that flexibility into our programs to make sure that we can get back into the cattle business the right way and not get ourselves over extended."

The event is Tuesday, April 24 at they Taylor County Extension Office. The deadline to sign up is Friday (4/20).

Admission is $40 per person if pre-registered but $50 per person at the door.
