Small Business Owners Want Abilene Mayor's Input on Sign Ordinance

Small business owners say they're upset at their lack of involvement in the ongoing debate over a proposed city sign ordinance.

The Abilene Association of Independent Business Owners had invited Mayor Norm Archibald to be a guest speaker at this month's meeting, but the mayor backed out.

The association says that's the second time that has happened.

Members say they wanted to hear the mayor's stance on issues, especially the sign ordinance, which was sent back to committee earlier this year.

The committee will be made up of citizens on both sides of the issue.

"As far as we know, the citizens committee has not been formed. A lot of us had signed up to be on the committee and no one's heard anything, " said AAIBO President, Bruce Kreitler.

In a statement to KRBC, Mayor Archibald had this to say about the citizen concerns.

"We are in the process of determining how to move forward after all of the work the Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) has already completed. We hope to resolve that very soon so we can move forward with a sign ordinance that is beneficial for business owners and it in the best interest of the city as well. "
