"The first quarter is up probably with numbers in the 2007 range so it's really, really been busy," says Margie Peck of Remax.

Like most realtors across the country, those in Abilene hit a low in 2009, but now many of them are thriving again, and not all for the same reasons.

"Well I do think the income tax refund is going to help a lot of families," Peck continues.

Now that tax refunds are starting to roll in, several people are looking to make a down payment on a house.

"The average price is coming up and the interest rate is still down and it's a fantastic time to buy a house," says Peck.

Not all realtors have shared this experience.

Some say the season has been pretty slow and rather than looking to buy a house, some people are just trying to make ends meet with their income tax money.

"They come in and pay two or three months late rent to try to catch up with their bills," says Josephine Bugarin of Rosanna's Realty.

Bugarin describes one of her customers who has been with the real estate agency for four years, "She pays five, six months late rent when she gets her income tax check."

In the business of real estate, some days are better than others, and and when those days come, it is a good sign.

"We just got one lady, she signed today, and bought a house, so her income tax check, she used that," says Bugarin.
