Hundreds from the community of Snyder put on their running shoes to to race on behalf of a local hero.

A 5k run was held this morning at Towle park to honor Corp. Darrell Campell.

He was shot in the head while responding to a call July of last year.

He was at the race to support his fellow colleges and supporters and was optimistic of his overall progress.

"It's just fantastic support.  Its been going on continuously since July i think the entire state of Texas and certainly the entire city of Snyder is one hundred percent behind him." said Snyder mayor Terry Martin.

"It makes me feel good that everybodys puttying this together for me, getting a little better every day," said Campbell.

The race was part of Running for the Heroes.

All of the funds from that race will go toward his recuperation.

After the race everyone enjoyed food, music and even a hot air balloon.

It is still unknown if and when Campbell will be able to return to work.

He served as a law enforcement officer for more than 13 years.
