They came they sawed and conquered- Mary Haines' yard that is.

"We go out in the community and serve people doing their yard work, painting, mowing whatever they need," said volunteer Carla Reidiger.

Volunteers from the Southern Hills of Christ Church saw the need and decided to help out.

It's all part of We Are The Sermon (WATS) day where various parishioners volunteer for a day instead of going to church.

It's a one day event, but volunteers want to make sure its an impact that lasts much longer.

They scraped, raked and painted to help out the single mother with tasks that she couldn't do on her own.

"It's stuff that I really don't get out to do.  I'm a single mom and i work and i deal with a teenager and I don't have time to do it," said Haines.

Mary's been struggling to get rid of obscuring branches and paint her home for quite some time.

Now she has a bit of relief.

"It's off my back , I don't have to worry about it," said Haines. "You know I'm going to pick up my daughter today and we're going to come home and she's going to say 'wow, it looks great'."

All thanks to a group of volunteers who decided to give up their Sunday afternoon and get their hands dirty.

To them its much more than just yard work.

"Well it's just part of giving back to people that I've been in their shoes and they need the help and I'm physically able to do it and god would want us to do it Jesus would be right here with us doing it," said Reidiger.

It's helping people like Haines have one less load to worry about.

"A lot of this stuff can weigh on your mind a lot throughout the months when it's getting done and you know you cant afford to do it and these people just come out and do it because they love us," she said.
