TxDOT Encourages Safety in Work Zones

The Texas Department of Transportation is sending a message to drivers in our area: pay attention in work zones.

TxDOT held a special ceremony this afternoon to remember crew members killed while on duty in a work zone.

With hundreds of construction projects all across the state, the event stressed the importance of paying attention to keep yourself and TxDOT crew members safe.

"We have to protect our most important resource of all, and that of course is the people who work behind these orange cones and behind these barrels on a day to day basis," says Lauren Garduno, TxDOT Abilene District Engineer.

"Speeding and tailgating are some of the main problems that were having in our work zones causing crashes," says Trooper Sparky Dean. "We would rather not issue a citation, but that's a small price to pay to save lives."

The event was part of National Work Zone Awareness Week.

Work zone crashes and fatalities have decreased in recent years.
