Cowgirl Softball Looks For Third ASC Title

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' softball team will be looking for its third American Southwest Conference Softball title this weekend in the six-team double-elimination ASC Championship at Oran Good Park in Farmer's Branch.
 
The Cowgirls start their tourney run on Thursday at noon against East Texas Baptist. Both teams come into the game with a record of 23-15 and the
 
The six-team double elimination tournament will run Thursday through Saturday. Mary Hardin-Baylor (24-15), Hardin-Simmons (23-15) and Howard Payne (19-19) are the three teams from the ASC West. Texas-Tyler (33-7), Louisiana College (25-11) and East Texas Baptist (23-15) are the ASC East qualifiers.
 
Hardin-Simmons is making its seventh appearance in the tournament in the nine-year history of the program and its fourth straight. HSU is 11-8 all-time in the tournament and won the league title in 2006 and 2007.
 
HSU and ETBU met one time in the regular season and the Tigers won 4-3 at the ASC First Pitch Tournament, also played at Oran Good Park.
 
The winner of that game will play Texas-Tyler on Thursday at 5 p.m. The loser will play at 1:30 on Friday.
The ASC champion earns the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III tournament.
 
ETBU will provide the audio coverage of the first game of the ASC Tournament.

HSU Notes
Under the direction of second-year head coach Dan Sheppard, the Cowgirls are making their fourth straight trip to the ASC Tournament. HSU is looking for its first ASC title since 2007.
 
The Cowgirls are led by a strong senior class of seven players. Seniors Kelsey Evans, Amy Meyer, Taylor Namey and Sarah Shurbet are playing in their fourth career ASC Tournament.

Blair Wallace
Senior Blair Wallace is one of the top players in the American Southwest Conference. She is hitting .443 on the year with seven home runs and 36 RBIs and she is 13-7 in the circle with a 2.20 ERA.
 
Amy Meyer
Senior shortstop Amy Meyer is one of the top players in Cowgirl history. She is hitting .328 with two home runs and 16 RBIs and has 13 extra-base hits. She has been solid defensively as well with only six errors in over 150 chances at shortstop. She has started 161 games for the Cowgirls in her career.
 
Taylor Namey
Senior catcher Taylor Namey set the HSU career record for home runs with 33 and is hitting .368 with seven home runs and 29 RBIs. She has started 159 games for the Cowgirls.
 
Sarah Shurbet
Senior pitcher Shurbet is 10-8 on the year with a 2.90 ERA and is second all-time at HSU with 39 career wins. She has worked 398 innings in her career.
 
Mac Attack
Sophomore second baseman and junior rightfielder Shelby McIntyre are both in their second years as starters for the Cowgirls. The Abilene Wylie grads are key cogs to the offense as Clay leads the team with 39 runs scored and McIntyre has started 110 games in right field.
 
Team Notes
The Cowgirls have hit 69 doubles, which is the second most in school history...The Cowgirls have set a school record for walks...Nine of the 15 Cowgirl losses have come by one run...HSU is 15-5 on the year when scoring first and 15-0 when leading after five innings. HSU is 22-5 when it scores more than two runs on the year.
