Abilene City Council approved an amendment to an ordinance to allow for a metered parking lot on North Second Street downtown.

That lot will use debit and credit cards.

The council also approved a motion to allow for any parking lot to install parking meters.

The Public Works Department says the meters and monitored lot will allow for better protection of visitors and downtown shoppers.

The changes will go into effect in early May.
