Young Owl Found in Sweetwater

An owl fledgling was rescued on Wednesday morning after Danielle Sargeant found the owl near the Hall Law Firm in front of a glass door. Another employee called the Sweetwater Animal Hospital.

Veterinary Technician Brenda Stevens with Sweetwater Veterinary Hospital came to the rescue along with Animal Control Officer Donald Kite to take the fledgling back to the animal hospital.

"The owl was nice and healthy and didn't seem to have any injuries," said Veterinarian Bud E. Alldredge, Jr., DVM. "It must have just floated down from its nest and just can't fly yet."

The owl was taken to the Abilene Zoo by Veterinarian Karen Hicks Alldredge, DVM, and will be housed in the raptor rehabilitation center, made for rehabilitating injured and fledgling birds.

"We get a lot of birds in when they're real young so we can raise them up to a point and then release them back into the wild," said Senior Zookeeper Rodney Weatherby.
