Department of Labor Withdraws Young Farm Workers Proposal

By: Gina Benitez
Updated: April 27, 2012
A proposal that would have affected child labor regulations and greatly impacted agricultural families has been withdrawn.

The Department of Labor wanted to expand prohibitions to keep young workers from operating almost all power-driven machines.

The proposal would have also kept young workers from herding animals and other livestock management practices.

The proposal was in an effort to make the nation's farms and ranches safer, but just angered many in the field.

Last year was the first attempt at a change in more than 40 years.
