McMurry Students Raising Awareness for Local, International Needs

Friday was day 5 of the "One Week, One Mission, One World Fundraiser" organized by McMurry Students.

All week people gathered on the lawn, and even slept in tents.

The event is a way for the McMurry community  to raise money for students and faculty who will be traveling to Haiti and India this summer for mission trips.
They decided to do a fundraiser like this to raise awareness about the living conditions around the world.
Students have been camping out all week and say it has helped them  put things in perspective as well as learn some pretty valuable lessons.

"I didn't even think about the way they lived or anything like that. I do see it a  little differently. I'm really fortunate to actually get to go home and I have my bed and shower and running water and everything and some of them don't," said participant, Becky Wilcox.

So far they have raised over $3,500.

The festivities will continue into the weekend and on Saturday night there will be a singer/songwriter competition at 6 pm at Radford Stadium.

McMurry students were also on a mission to end local hunger during this week's World Village Camp Out.

Friday's Empty Bowls project kicked off at 11am on McMurry's Wah Wahtaysee Park.

College ceramic students  provided hand crafted bowls and asked for a $10 donation in exchange for a bowl of soup.

"Because a lot of people say, well what are you doing here? Yeah, you're helping with the missions in India and Haiti, but what are you doing here for the people that are hungry right here. And that's what emty bowls is for, " said Paige, the Empty Bowls Coordinator

All proceeds will go directly to the  United Methodist Food Pantry.
