The sound broke all silence.

"I heard screaming, screaming and that was it just screaming," said Merkel resident Rebecca Crawford.

Neighbors rushed to the sound of the screams to find the father, clutching to his 2-year-old son after he realized he had backed into him with his truck.

"I seen the pickup stop and then i seen the daddy jump out and upset and freaking out," said Leslie Webb, who lives across the street from the home where the accident occurred.

Neighbors immediately called nine one one after the parents begged for help.

"They were screaming at the top of their lungs, crying and screaming and hysterical and of course they would, it was an accident and it was a little tiny baby," said Susan Rivera, who was the first to call 911.

Merkel police marked the area where the boy was hit, just feet away from his home.

Officials say the father told them he was reversing his truck when he heard a thump- the screams were what made him realize just what he had hit.

Neighbors are still shaken from what they saw.

"It was emotional, you know that kind of thing, I mean it was bad," said Webb.

The home was left completely open, the truck still in the garage-  the aftermath of a horrific scene that happened in an instant.

"You just don't ever want to witness or see anything  like that ever in your life," said Rivera.

Merkel police say the boy was rushed to Hendrick Medical Center with multiple injuries.  Police say he was listed in critical condition and taken into surgery until he was pronounced dead at around 5:30 p.m.

He was the youngest of two children for the family.  Officials have yet to release the victim's name.

While I completely understand what you're say Anonymous A., I have to say I don't think this is the time for the "i told you so's". What a tragic loss and an "accident". I know your idea and intentions are good, but you should consider taking down that comment.

To:Anonymous A.: I can't believe you just posted that comment on here. What kind of insensitive nimrod says something like that directed towards a family who has just experienced one of the greatest tragedies imaginable. So only rich people can have kids? Poor people don't deserve children because they can't afford modern conveniences? People got along just fine without "modern safety's" for centuries. No wonder you wanted to be anonymous.
