McM Women Second in ASC Track; Coleman & Alexander Honored

CLINTON, Miss. - McMurry University's women's track and field battled back into contention on Saturday at the American Southwest Conference Championships, but in the end came up a little short and finished as the runner-up.

Trailing by 28 points entering the day, McMurry got to within four points of first place with three events left. In the end, however, Texas Lutheran amassed 258 points to the War Hawks' final tally of246 .

Sophomore Shanita Coleman earned the ASC awards for high point scorer of the meet, booking 39 points for the War Hawks. She was also named as the "Field Event Athlete of the Year" after claiming championships in the long jump (setting an ASC record) and the triple jump. Just for good measure, Coleman also earned a pair of championships on the track by anchoring both of McM's relay teams, while also placing second in the 200 and third in the 400 meters.

Tiana Alexander - who finished second to Coleman in the long jump and was third in the triple - was named as the ASC's "Freshman of the Year." Alexander ran the third leg of the War Hawks' winning 4x100 relay team, was third in the 100 dash, fifth in the 200, second in the 100 hurdles and was fifth in the high jump, finishing second to Coleman in total points scored for her team.

Felicia Rivers<http://www.mcmurrysports.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=3032> was the War Hawks only other individual winner,  taking the top spot in the hammer throw. Rivers let loose with a heave of 145' 7 ". Rivers finished third in both the javelin and discus on Saturday, as well.

Destiny Kesee and Kim Martinez were third and fourth in the hammer. Kesee was fourth in the discus.

Laura Oviedo was the runner-up in the 400 meters (58.05). Olivias Gantt and Lauren Peery finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 800. Peery was also the runner-up in the 1500.

Dannelle Kortkamp posted a third place in the 400 hurdles.

The War Hawks' winning 4x100 relay team - which had a time of 46.69 seconds - was made up of Carla Burton, Kendra Coleman, Alexander and Shanita Coleman. The 4x400 quartet ran a 3:54.02 and was comprised of Leah Doughty, Keisha Collins, Oviedo and Shanita Coleman.

Collins - who was  McM's leading scorer and an All-ASC player in women's basketball in the winter - was also sixth in the high jump and fourth in the triple jump for her track teammates.

Mariah Steinbock was second in the pole vault and sixth in the javelin.
