Cowboys End Season At Texas-Tyler

TYLER, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons won a dramatic 6-5, 14-inning game against Texas-Tyler but fell 3-1 in the nightcap in the American Southwest Conference Championship Series to end its season.
 
Bryan Shore shut the Cowboys out in the second game for eight innings on five hits. He earned the win for Texas-Tyler. Jacob Yanker worked the ninth for the save. 
 
The Patriots scored single runs in the first, second and fifth innings. T.J. Martin had an RBI single in the first, Aaron McCain had an RBI triple in the second and Hayden Click had an RBI double in the eighth.
 
Troy Nicholson went four and two-third innings and allowed three runs to fall to 4-5 on the year. James Simmons worked three and one-third shutout innings.
 
Bryan Blare had an RBI single for the Cowboys in the ninth.
 
HSU finished the year with a record of 20-20 and UT-Tyler is now 33-10 and will advance to the ASC Championship Tournament next weekend in Austin.
 
Jon Finney had two hits to lead HSU. Six different Patriots had a hit for UTT. 
 
The Cowboys forced the final game with a dramatic 6-5 win in 14 innings as Jason Vause had an RBI single in the bottom of the 14th inning for the win.
 
The Patriots scored the first run in the second inning when Jon Finney dropped a pop up with two outs to allow Will Allen to score. It was the only run they would get until two outs in the ninth.
 
HSU took a 3-1 lead with three runs in the fifth. Andrew Rehling singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sac bunt. Chris Matthews singled and then Troy Nicholson followed with an RBI double. Jon Finney and Austin Cantwell then had back-to-back RBI singles. 
 
The Cowboys scored a run in the eighth on an RBI single by Rehling.
 
Blake Sieck started and went into the ninth with a 4-1 lead. He struck out Will Allen and got a ground ball by Garrett Machacek that Troy Tarrant misplayed. David Ring then singled and Jake Ashley flew out. Aaron McCain had a single to left, Machacek scored on a passed ball. Billy Lirely then had a two-run single to left to tie the game. James Simmons came on and got out of the inning and worked three and two-third innings, striking out six.
 
It stayed 4-4 until the 13th when McCain had an RBI single off Tyler Brunnemann, who had replaced Simmons with runners on the corners and one out. He got out of the inning and HSU responded.  Jason Vause singled to lead off the inning and stole second with two outs. Jon Finney drove a solid single to right center.
 
In the 14th, Ryan Reagor singled with one out and moved to second on a passed ball. Troy Tarrant was intentionally walked. After a fly out by Rehling, Vause hit a soft liner to center and Reagor scored the winning run.
 
Sieck went eight and two-third innings and allowed four unearned runs. Simmons allowed one run in three and two-third innings and Brunnemann went an inning and two third and struck out three to earn the win and improve to 3-1.
 
Rehling had five hits for the Cowboys and Finney added three. McCain, Lirely, Hayden Chick, Machacel and Ring all had two hits for UTT. Chase Willard took the loss allowing a run in two-thirds of an inning.
