HSU Professor Earns National Honor

David Stuckey, department head, associate professor of fitness and sport sciences, and director of the Athletic Training Education Program at Hardin-Simmons University was recognized by the National Athletic Trainers' Association.
The Athletic Trainer Service Award recognizes NATA members for their contributions to the athletic training profession as a volunteer at the local, state, and district levels. ATSA recipients have been involved in professional associations, community organizations, grassroots public relations efforts, and service as a volunteer athletic trainer.
The honor reflects his 26 years of service to the national association, the Southwest Athletic Trainers' Association, and the athletic training students at HSU.
Stuckey is in his 26th year at HSU, starting as head athletic trainer and becoming director of athletic training education in 1999. Stuckey served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at the University of North Dakota.
Stuckey holds memberships in the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA), Southwest Athletic Trainers' Association (SWATA), and Texas State Athletic Trainers Association (TSATA), and is a licensed and certified athletic trainer.
He remains clinically active, working HSU and local high school events. Besides covering HSU teams for 20 years, Stuckey also worked with the local Fellowship of Christian Athletes Myrle Greathouse Football Classic, in the volunteer sports medicine program of the U.S. Olympic Committee, and the 2003 National Figure Skating Championships.
Stuckey has been very involved with student committee activities in both NATA and SWATA. In 2006, he was awarded the NCAA Division III Head Athletic Trainer of the Year by NATA. He has presented at local, district and national meetings on topics such as emergency planning, general medical concerns, and documentation.
Stuckey will formally receive the award at the NATA Annual Meeting & Clinical Symposium in St. Louis, Missouri, in June 2012.
