Eastland Man Gets Maximum Sentence for Meth Charge

Bobby Dean Brown, 53, of Olden, was found guilty by a jury in the 91st District Court of Eastland County on Monday, April 30 and sentenced on May 1.
Brown was charged with possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine, less than 1 gram, a State Jail felony. The jury sentenced Brown to 2 years confinement in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, and assessed a $10,000.00 fine, both the maximum allowed by law.
An Eastland Sheriff's Deputy arrested Brown on Sept, 2, 2011 after assisting the Eastland County Community Supervision and Corrections Department in locating a non-reporting probationer, who also testified at trial.
Brown was arrested after the deputy and an assisting state trooper discovered the methamphetamine and pipe in Brown's vehicle. Assistant Criminal District Attorney Sarah Adams and Criminal District Attorney Russ Thomason represented the State, and Jacob Blizzard from Abilene represented Brown at trial.
During the punishment hearing Tuesday, the jury heard testimony that Brown had been previously convicted multiple times of possession of methamphetamine. The jury assessed the maximum punishment after deliberating for approximately 20 minutes.
After the verdict was returned Monday, Director David Cherry commented, "This is exactly why we monitor some of our probationers so closely-their rehabilitation can be completely undone if they go back to hanging out with their old crowd."
Tuesday after sentencing, Criminal District Attorney Russ Thomason explained, "Our citizens recognize the effects of methamphetamine on our community, and sent yet another message to that element of the county, that methamphetamine will not be tolerated."
Lead prosecutor, Sarah Adams, echoed Thomason's sentiments, "For the next 24 months Mr. Brown will not be using methamphetamine, no one will be selling it to him, and he won't be driving on our streets under the influence. Our community will be that much safer while he is incarcerated."
